Dust Control
Gravel road surfaces are a mix of various-sized aggregates and small particles (fines) that bind together to create a strong surface.
During dry periods, particularly in summer, the gravel surface dries and these fines become airborne with traffic, creating dust. Losing these important fines weakens the road surface over time, leaving not enough binding material for the remaining larger aggregate. This leaves the road surface loose, more prone to potholes (requiring more frequent grading), and eventually will wear down to the sub-base of the road.
Annual applications of our dust control product will not only create a safer worksite through dust mitigation but will also significantly improve the strength and longevity of your gravel surfaces, reducing grading and gravel replacement costs.

How Our Products Work
Of the many dust control products available, chloride salts, with their hygroscopic properties, are among the best dust mitigation solutions.
The primarily-used salts are magnesium chloride and calcium chloride. These salts are capable of absorbing humidity from the surrounding air and binding the water molecules to the surface. In the dry summer months, this generally occurs overnight and early morning, when humidity levels are higher and the air has sufficient moisture for the salts to be able to capture and retain some of this water into the road surface as the weather warms up through the day. The more humidity that is present in the air, the more the salts in the road surface can retain water. The more salt that can be applied and bound into the road surface, the more effective the dust control product.
Calcium vs Magnesium Chloride?
While both chloride salts have similar performance as dust control products, calcium’s heavier ion can better bind and stay bound to road surfaces. Calcium is a key component in the formation of the hard shells of sea creatures such as clams and is the fifth most common element in the earth’s surface. Liquid calcium salts have a higher density, allowing for more active product to be applied to the road surface than with magnesium.
Environmental
Oil-based and polymer (plasticized organics) based dust control solutions can pose environmental hazards as these products are slowly washed away into surface and groundwater. Our salt solutions are natural components of seawater and are not environmentally hazardous to watercourses in small quantities. Calcium & Magnesium is commonly found in surface rocks and soil; these minerals form the building blocks of all plants and animals.
